With the US having one of the highest costs of healthcare in the world, it comes as little surprise that most Americans carry exorbitant amounts of medical debt. In 2019, the average cost of healthcare in the United States was $11,462. In 2022, this figure rose to $12,530. At the end of 2019, research by the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that the total medical debt in the US has reached at least $195 billion, with the figure expected to rise to account for debt incurred during the Covid-19 pandemic.
